Skulls and Shackles

Session #13: Building a Reputation

This session included Pirate Captain Pirate, Hobbes, Manumit, and Kanger. This also began Book 3 of Skulls and Shackles. After retrieving the treasure of Cyrus Wolfe, the group headed back to Rickety Squibs to attach their new ram onto the Jenny and apply wooden plating. During this time the group went on a shopping spree, selling many of their treasure and purchasing new items. After reconstruction was finished, they set off to build up more infamy to become free captains of the shackles. They sailed around to multiple locations including Port Peril and Crown's End, attempting to make infamy checks and failing to do so. They managed to engage in a few ship battles between some slavers and revolted slaves, which helped gain infamy. The group returned to Crown's End, questioning what they should do next. Kanger set out on finding love, one of his original goals. Through use of persuasion, Kanger managed to court a young woman and completed his long desired goal. This is where the session ended.

Session #12: The Lost Treasure

This session included Hobbes, Kanger, Scrinti, and Pirate Captain Pirate (being played by me). This session also marked the final session of Book 2. It began with the party leaving Tidewater Rock and Kanger being introduced to Pirate Captain Pirate and Manumit. With Sandara's help, the party managed to find the location of Mancatcher Cove. Upon arrival, the party spotted the Thresher, the same ship that raided Tidewater Rock, but they decided to leave it be as the ship did not attack them. The party also spotted a canopy creeper lurking above the cove, but it did not attack them as well. Manumit decided to stay on the ship just in case one of these 2 potential enemies were to attack. After spotting sahuagin riding sharks and a lucky acrobatics check, Scrinti jumped on top of a sahuagin and began to attack, with the rest of the party following after. Thanks to potions of water breathing, the party was able to safely dive underwater and explore the cove. They dove 160 ft below and spotted a large swarm of jellyfish blocking an entranceway. Hobbes spotted a conch shell horn and blew into it, alarming a few sahuagin and a tojanida. They defeated the beasts and swam into the underwater dungeon. The party pushed through many sahuagin and hammerhead sharks and found themselves at a secret door where Hobbes was drawn towards. The secret room was revealed to have an ancient mariner who still lived and attacked the party. He was killed and Kanger took his cursed deep platinum necklace. After pushing through more sahuagin, they came across the hatchery being guarded by a large sahuagin matron. She was quickly disposed of and the party ignored the tadpoles. Hobbes came across a ring of animal friendship and put it to good use by charming a hammerhead shark that the party decided to name Clarence. As the party delved deeper into the cave, they defeated the "alpha" hammerhead shark and entered the chambers of Krelloort. Krelloort was heavily armored, wielded a powerful trident, and had four arms. He and his concubines attacked the party but Krelloort was frozen in place from Hobbes' hold person spell. This gave Kanger and Scrinti the opportunity to quickly defeat Krelloort. His trident was given to Kanger and the secret passageway to the treasure room was discovered. Thousands upon thousands of gold pieces in valuables lied in this room along with a treasure chest that was classified as a type IV bag of holding, and a new ram for the ship. The party exited the dungeon and shortly celebrated this victory as the Thresher attacked. The new captain, Knuckles Grype was enraged by the party's success and charged in to attack. The canopy creeper was awoken and joined the fray as well, grabbing and consuming a few enemy pirates and almost grabbed Scrinti. It stopped fighting after it received its meal and Knuckles gave up, begging for mercy. Despite Hobbes' command to spare him, Kanger killed him anyway, changing his alignment to neutral evil. Sandara ran up to the deck to tell the party of her pilgrimage to Besmara. She requested to take the Thresher and its crew to help her complete the pilgrimage. Hobbes agreed to her request and Sandara said her goodbyes to the party and sailed off. The session ended with the party deciding to sail to Rickety Squibs to attach their new ram and to celebrate their victory with plenty of alcohol.

Session #11: Cracking the Rock

This session included Hobbes, Scrinti, Eremander, and the new party member, Kanger. The session began with Pirate Captain Pirate being revoked as captain. He scolded the party and marched to his quarters where he proceeded to get drunk. Hobbes was elected the new captain of the ship, now referred to as Captain Hobbes. The group decided to sail to Tidewater Rock where they were met with Lady Agasta Smythee, Royster McCleagh, and his foster son, Kanger McCleagh. Manumit stayed on the ship with Pirate Captain Pirate to make sure he didn't do anything stupid. After negotiations and dinner with the Lady, she allowed the party to use Tidewater Rock as a base of operations, thus "cracking" the rock. Not too long after that, a servant by the name of Mardus Siggs sustained a gruesome wound to the leg and was discovered by Hobbes where he healed his wounds. After the healing process, Kanger and Hobbes were ambushed by a group of sahuagin. They defeated the group and continued improving relationships on Tidewater Rock. The following day at 2 AM, a horde of pirates led by Isabella "Inkskin" Locke invaded Tidewater Rock and attacked the PCs. Isabella snuck from the roof to the bottom floor via fly and invisibility, summoning a lion to guard her path. She attacked the PCs by magic missiles, lightning bolts, and with her sword, Brine's Sting. She was killed by Eremander and through an investigation of her many tattoos, they discovered a map leading to the lost treasure of Cyrus Wolfe in Mancatcher Cove. There was also a riddle on the tattoo which was partially deciphered. The session ended with Kanger joining the PCs and the party sailing off to Mancatcher Cove.

Session #10: A Fallen Friend

This session included Pirate Captain Pirate, Pirate Rakham, Manumit, Hobbes, and Eremander. The session began with The Jenny noticing the dinghy approach from The Dominator. After a few ballista shots, the party was reunited and sailed off. After sailing away and docking at Bloodcove, Eremander was introduced to the others and was assigned as a rigger. After a long rest and recovery, Hobbes brought up the story Sandara had told him of Zedonehz. The party agreed to travel to this island and after making their way there, they soon found themselves attacked by a manticore on their ship. Defeating the manticore, the party lands on the island to once again find another manticore which they defeat as well. After traveling into a cave on the island, they discovered Zedonehz, an undead manticore sitting on a throne. Manumit recognized this manticore as the same creature that enslaved him when he was young but he recalled that it died. Zedonehz revealed to Manumit that he was resurrected and he wishes to enslave him once again. It was at this point a draugr appeared, and Manumit recognized this undead thing as what was once his father. A fight began as Rakham charged the draugr and decapitated it in front of Manumit, terrifying him. Zedonehz knocked Manumit unconscious, causing Hobbes in a fit of rage to charge the manticore and killed him. Manumit was revived only to kick Rakham and be retaliated on with a swift punch to the face, knocking him back out, only frustrating him more. Rakham also kissed the skull of the creature for some odd reason which cursed him. Manumit was once again revived and refused to speak with Rakham. The party returned to The Jenny to celebrate and Rakham asked Rosie out on a "date"  which she accepted. Upon getting ready in his chambers, a Bearded Devil appeared before him demanding for his soul and attacked. Rakham bolted out of the room, screaming for help. He received help from Badger, Jack, Crimson, Pirate Captain Pirate, and Eremander. Unfortunately, the devil's shear determination to kill Rakham could not be stopped as he killed Crimson who stood in his way and slew the orc in front of the crew. Pirate Captain Pirate killed the devil and mourned Rakham's lost. The party attempted to go to Port Peril to resurrect Rakham but due to the price being 11,000 gold pieces, the PCs believed it was best to move on. Thus, a funeral service for Rakham and Crimson began, with each PC, including Eremander, giving a small speech on Rakham. Manumit even felt bad despite his anger towards him. The session ended with Pirate Captain Pirate being revoked as captain due to his poor decision making as a leader and Manumit realizing that he's the last original crew member of the Wormwood.

Side Session #2: 10 Years of Hell

This session included Pirate Rakham (still wasn't here so I played as him), Hobbes, and a new guest/player known as Eremander, a human bloodrager with the destined bloodline. The session began with Rakham and Hobbes waking up in the bilges of The Dominator. They were not alone, as another man was with them in the bilges. The man introduced himself as Eremander and stayed quiet. Commander Kyan Kain entered the room and began interrogating Hobbes and Rakham. After the interrogation, he released their chains and put them immediately to harsh labor. The three men swabbed the entire upper deck of the ship, at this point the ship was still disabled. They completed the task and were rewarded with being fully healed and the returning of their equipment. The group then discussed further and learned from Eremander that not only was he has been slave on this ship for ten years but he was thrown into the bilges for attempting to escape on a dinghy he was ordered to build. They then decided to escape immediately as they assumed Kain would not expect them to leave so soon. They failed to sneak onto the upper deck and were spotted by a group of marines. In fact, Kain himself climbed down from the crow's nest as he knew their plan, and thus a battle began. The party fought through the marines and as Kain stuggled to fight, he was hit from behind by Eremander and had his skull smashed in, killing Kain instantly. The session ended with the party hoping onto a dinghy and escaping, making their way to Bloodcove, hoping their friends are alive and safe.

Side Session #1: The Deathknell

This session included Pirate Captain Pirate, Manumit, and Scrinti Cat'Bak (he was sick so I played as him). This session immediately began with the naval combat against The Jenny and The Deathknell. It didn't last long as the ships quickly grappled with each other. The PCs did not get any HP or their spells back from last session as these events happened in rapid succession, so because of this Manumit was low on HP and spells. In the beginning of combat on the deck of The Deathknell, the PCs had to fight some Brine Zombies. Manumit quickly fell unconscious but before he fell he told the group to go for the bell as he deciphered the legend. Scrinti charged the bell which led to Whalebone dispelling the zombies and using his steal breath ability on him, causing Scrinti to fall unconscious, luckily he didn't die. This left a one on one duel between Whalebone and Pirate Captain Pirate. Thanks to him casting Gravity Bow, he quickly disposed of Whalebone, revived Scrinti and Manumit, and Scrinti destroyed the bell. The session ended with the PCs sailing off to the cove, hoping the other party members are there and alive.

Session #9: Dire Straits

This session included Pirate Captain Pirate, Pirate Rakham (He couldn't make it so I played as his character), Manumit, and Hobbes. The session began with the group continuing to sail on the seas, fighting ships and traveling to ports. After Hobbes burned down the merchant ship, Sandara told him that Besmara's presence has left him entirely. She also pointed out information on a creture named Zedonehz who has been enslaving innocent civilians on an island. Sandara believed that if this creature were to be dealt with, Besmara would return to him. Hobbes took note of this information but did not tell anyone. One night the group ran into the Deathknell, a ghost ship captained by Whalebone Pilk. This made the group nervous but they pressed on. The next night they saw it again, this time Manumit deciphered the legend of the Deathknell and learned that the next night it will attack them. This gave the PCs the idea of traveling to a port and staying there for the night. Unfortunately The Jenny's water supply ran low, requiring the group to sail to a cove to refill it, rendering them vulnerable to the Deathknell. The Jenny was about to leave the cove but a Chelish pirate hunter ship known as The Dominator blocked their path. This terrified the PCs but their carpenter Lawrence came up with a plan. By climbing into the tiller cabin, they can disable the tiller rope by cutting it and preventing the ship from moving, allowing a safe escape. The PCs agreed to the plan and Pirate Captain Pirate stayed back to sail the ship as soon as they disable the rope. So, Rakham, Manumit, and Hobbes ventured into The Dominator's tiller cabin where they encountered Commander Kyan Kain. He demanded reasoning behind their intrusion but didn't believe their lies so he attacked. The party soon found themselves surrounded by marines and Rakham quickly fell unconscious. The tiller rope was disabled but Manumit escaped and Hobbes was also knocked unconscious, trying to protect Manumit's escape which changed his alignment back to normal. After Manumit returned to The Jenny he told Pirate Captain Pirate to sail away. The session ended with The Deathknell appearing before The Jenny and preparing to attack.

Session #8: On the High Seas!

This session included Pirate Captain Pirate, Pirate Rakham, Manumit, Hobbes, and Scrinti Cat'Bak. The session began with the strange ship approaching. The captain showed himself along with some bodyguards and introduced himself as Captain Merrill Pegsworthy. He recognized the Man's Promise and demanded to speak with the captain. Pirate Captain Pirate revealed himself as captain and told him how he got the ship truthfully. Pegsworthy was impressed, revealing that he is no friend of Harrigan's and offered to rechristen the ship. The group agreed and were quickly sent to the watch tower to check on the guard there. After a fight with some boars they made their way to the tower and discovered a parrot who kept repeating the same sentence over and over. At the tower they discovered the guard to be dead due to an allergic reaction to the wasps. They brought the parrot with them and returned the news to Rickety where he thanked them and let him keep the parrot, Rotgut for themselves, granting Pirate Captain Pirate his animal companion. The next day the Man's Promise was rechristened by Rickety and Pegsworthy under the new name, "The Jenny." Before the PCs left, Merrill Pegsworthy told them of Tidewater Rock and how if they sought to become infamous, that's where they should go. So the group sailed away and began their adventure, and with some new crew members including their carpenter, Lawrence Freewind, a man who struggled with amnesia after a head injury from escaping a ship that he was on that was taken over by Captain Gortus Svard. The PCs battle merchant ships throughout their adventure and at one point Scrinti told Hobbes to burn down a ship with the people inside as revenge. Hobbes agreed and burned the ship, killing the innocents, changing his alignment to neutral evil. The party eventually encountered Svard's ship, raiding another merchant ship. The Jenny sailed forward and with Morrison as the Master Gunner, Scrinti as the Boatswain, and Pirate Captain Pirate as the Pilot, they attacked. Once grappled to each other, Svard was revealed to be a Hobgoblin and demanded a battle. An enemy sailor made his way to a catapult and launched it at Manumit where it landed a critical hit for 6d6 x 2 but the damage only put him to 0 HP instead of negative. Svard was eventually defeated and his ship was looted. The session ended with The Jenny giving chase to the other merchant ship that got away.

Session #7: A New Beginning

This session included Pirate Maheem, Barhare, Morrison, and Cal. Before the session, the players told each other their new nicknames. Pirate Maheem is Pirate Captain Pirate, Barhare is Pirate Rakham, Morrison is Manumit, Cal is Hobbes, and Scrunto is Scrinti Cat'Bak. The PCs arrive at Rickety Squibs and meet Rickety Hake. They sell him the majority of their treasure gold in order to afford the squib. On the island, the PCs explore around, sell stuff, and recruit new sailors. They helped some sailors on the island from a young water naga, deducting the price of the squibbing. A few days pass and from the jungle, a swarm of giant wasps fly in and begin attacking. The PCs make their way to the emergency tent and defeat some wasps in the process. They eventually fly away but not soon after, a ship sails in unannounced which worries Rickety. This is where the session ended.

Session #6: The Mutiny

This session included Pirate Maheem, Barhare, Morrison, and Cal. We continued the journey through Bonewrack Isle where Barhare climbed up a large stone fist and noticed Grindylows heading into a cave, one of which had Sandara's tricorne. The PCs gave chase and followed them into a cave. The group fought through numerous amounts of Grindylows. Eventually the PCs found themselves fighting a Devil Fish that almost killed Barhare. Morrison threw the anchor feather token at the fish, crashing the anchor down on it, killing the creature. Barhare and Pirate Maheem fell unconscious deep into the cave and Cal and Morrison wanted to escape. They retreated to the beach to rest and heal and returned back to the cave, with one day left on the Island. The PCs entered into the final chamber and discovered Sandara and Jack hanging from the ceiling. Jack warned the PCs about the Brinebrood Queen and she appeared, cutting the ropes and sending Sandara and Jack into the water below. Another Grindylow known as The Whale appeared and attacked. The group at that point split, Barhare and Cal went for The Whale, Pirate Maheem went for the Brinebrood Queen, and Morrison went into the water to save Sandara and Jack. After quickly removing The Whale, Barhare and Cal jumped into the water as well to help Morrison. The Brinebrood Queen also went into the water and Pirate Maheem, making this an underwater brawl. Two lacedons were also in this pool as well. Morrison cut the ropes binding the two sailors and handed Sandara and Jack some of his weapons as they began to escape. Jack almost died to a lacedon but escaped. Cal, Sandara, and Jack swam out of the pool as Cal began to aid the injured sailors. Barhare killed the Brinebrood Queen and they all reunited out of the pool. As thanks, Sandara gave Cal her tricorne and Jack owed his life to the PCs. Jack also told the group that he eavesdropped on Plugg and discovered that he intended on killing them upon their return. The PCs, Sandara, and Jack returned to the Man's Promise to discover Plugg and Scourge held the friendly PCs hostage and challenged the group to a battle. They accepted and battle ensued. Plugg targeted Morrison while Scourge targeted Barhare. A few hostile sailors were killed including another enemy of Barhare, Fipps Chumlett. Scourge was killed by Barhare and after Morrison was knocked unconscious and about to be coup de graced, Plugg was killed by Pirate Maheem. The remaining hostile sailors who surrendered were sent to Bonewrack Isle and died of Ghoul Fever. Pirate Maheem was elected as captain of the ship and decided to sail to Rickety Squibs to remodel their ships.
